Get Your Shovel
Make a Trench
I recently had a dream that spoke a profound Word in my life. In the dream I was standing in our yard facing our house, although though I did not recognize the house and yard as they are in my actual life today. But I saw a small flame of fire appear out of nowhere in the middle of the yard. It began rapidly increasing and spreading toward me. At that point I realized that right behind me was a “storehouse” type of building. It was not an old garage that had junk and extra stuff in, but it was a building that had important, precious, valuable, and useful things. The fire was heading for the building, not the house, and would totally consume and destroy what I knew was mine and my family’s in that “storehouse.” At first, it seemed there was no hope to fight against such a destructive force. But I said, “No, I will not stand back and let this happen!” I grabbed a shovel (not sure where it came from) and began creating a wide and deep trench the width of the yard in front of the building to prevent the fire from crossing the “line.” I then woke up.
In pondering about this dream and letting the Holy Spirit show me what I needed to hear, understand, or be taught, there were several things that came forth. First, the enemy (represented as fire) desires to destroy whatever he can. John 10:10 says, “The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).” But look how the fire started. It started as a small flame, but increased rapidly. Satan sneaks in slowly in a particular area of our life, any area that is a weak point that he can cause a little spark of destructive fire to start knowing that if left uncontrolled his “plan” would spread and increase to destruction of whatever form that may take on. It does not have to be sin, although it may, but it could be such as allowing your daily schedule to begin slowly and gradually over time to consume or overwhelm you to where time with God in prayer and study of the Bible become crowded out. Satan definitely desires to destroy your intimate time with God.
Secondly, in regards to the “storehouse” type of building that had important, precious, valuable, and useful things that were mine or my family’s, Satan is constantly trying to destroy that which God has given us, as well as trying to destroy or to prevent us from receiving those things stored up in heaven that are rightfully ours. He seeks to destroy the salvation of our family members, finances to live on and to be a blessing with to the Kingdom of God, health that is much needed to work for God in our daily lives, and our valuable and precious time spent with God to grow spiritually and grow closer in relationship with His Son, Jesus Christ. But God said in Deuteronomy 28:8 when we live for Him and obey His commandments, “The LORD will command the blessing on you in your storehouses and in all to which you set your hand, and He will bless you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you.” God does not want the enemy to steal your blessed storehouses. He does not want you to back off or give up and say, “Well, I can’t control what if happening in my life. I can’t do anything about it. I guess this is just the way it has to be. I don’t know how to stop this blazing, consuming fire in my life.”
Well, what did I do in my dream? I said, “No! It will not destroy my storehouse!” And I grabbed a shovel and began digging. I basically “drew a line in the sand” and said enough is enough, I take my authority that has been placed in my hands through the name of Jesus Christ!
What did I create with the shovel to stop the fire from its intended path? I dug a trench the width of the yard. It was a very large line that fire could not and cannot cross because the fire’s fuel is eliminated. A trench can hold water that flows freely. Life-giving, healing water flows from Jesus Christ. Jesus said in John 7:38, “He who believes in Me [who cleaves to and trusts in and relies on Me] as the Scripture has said, From his innermost being shall flow [continuously] springs and rivers of living water.” As a Child of God who believes and trusts fully in Jesus, living water flows from you, fills that trench you have created by faith, prayer, and authority in Jesus, and quenches the fire from the enemy. The Bible says in Ephesians 6:14-16, “14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; 16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.”
In other words, it is spiritual warfare you are involved in. Satan is always at war against you and against your spirit, and your spirit is always at war against your flesh. Think about an actual battle. A trench created by a soldier can be deep enough to take refuge in or fight from when in battle. So, grab your spiritual shovel, dig your trench, put on our spiritual armor, stand firm on God’s Word, and remember that Jesus is right there with you, standing in the gap, fighting with you as God fights your battle, for He said in His Word, “…Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s” (2 Chron. 20:15) and “…You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the LORD, who is with you…” (2 Chron. 20:17).
