Ephesians 6:17 says, "And take the Helmet of Salvation..."
When you think about the Greek word dechomai, meaning "take" in verse seventeen, it is not something you ASK for. You know it belongs to you, so you "take" it. It also implies that you PUT it on. God will not put it on you. That is your responsibility.
The word "salvation" literally means "deliverance", and is more often than not, used to mean salvation from threatening enemy. There are many examples in the Bible, such as:
Exodus 14:13 "And Moses said to the people, 'Do not be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which He will accomplish for you today. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall see again no more forever.'"
II Samuel 22:3 "The God of my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, My stronghold and my refuge; My Savior, You save me from violence."
Psalm 20:5 "We will rejoice in your salvation,And in the name of our God we will set up our banners! May the LORD fulfill all your petitions."
Its All In Your Mind!
The Helmet of Salvation is the certainty of deliverance from the enemy and sin, and protection of our minds during battle. Most of the battle is in our thought life. The thought life is where Satan can manipulate people discreetly and undetected. If he can distort or affect our thoughts, our emotions, and our knowledge, then our behaviors, relationships, and situations will fall the way he wants them to. Just a small amount of distorted thinking can neutralize and cause us to practically be ineffective. We have to put on the Helmet of Salvation and fill our minds with God's truth, His Word, and operate out of what He teaches us. It's not just KNOWING what God's Word says that is effective against the enemy, but it is ACTING on His Work.
The Word of God is stored, embedded, and memorized in our mind. Our mind reads God's Words and meditates and thinks about God's Words throughout the day. Our mind is like the control room where battle decisions are made. The mind (involving the spirit) thinks it, so that the mouth can speak it out against the enemy. That is why the enemy has a big red bull's eye target on the mind to make it ineffective. It does not take a "Brain Scientist" to figure that out.
II Corinthians 10:4-5 says, "4)For the weapons of our warfare are not physical [weapons of flesh and blood], but they are mighty before God for the overthrow and destruction of strongholds, 5) [In as much as we] refute arguments and theories and reasonings and every proud and lofty thing that sets itself up against the [true] knowledge of God; and we lead every thought and purpose away captive into the obedience of Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One)."
The battle occurs in the spiritual realm, but within or against the mind. Look at the key words in that portion of scripture that indicates the battlefield being the mind: arguments, theories, reasonings, proud and lofty thing, thought and purpose.
The Helmet of Salvation Protects from Head Wounds!
In the natural realm, when a person is wounded in the head he can no longer effectively use the rest of his equipment. He may be a very brave and efficient soldier and have excellent equipment, but when he is injured in the head, it becomes very hard for him to make effective use of his battle skills, abilities, and equipment or to make wise decisions. The thought process can be distorted.
This is also true in the spiritual realm. At times you may find yourself engaged in battles in your life. You may go through times of doubts and struggles, bombarded with the flaming missiles of the enemy at your mind. The Shield of Faith will extinguish them, but faith can only function around the truths you have been taught. You cannot have specific faith in principles you do not know, do not remember, or that have been distorted. You must be fitted with your Helmet of Salvation.
The enemy will attack your mind where your helmet is or "should be". Your helmet needs to be on and securely attached so it is not knocked off easily. You must effectively utilize your helmet so that your mind can make effective use of the other armors and weapons. Your mind needs to be filled with foundational knowledge, like the fact that you are God's child and have Kingdom authority over the Adversary. Through the power of the Holy Spirit you are to take control of your mind, put on the Helmet of Salvation, and stand against the enemy.
