When you use prayer to wage warfare you do not only just make your petitions known to God for your own personal wants, needs, and problems. You also intercede for other people, leaders, and nations, pulling down strongholds of Satan and his demonic forces.
This type of warfare includes private, corporate, worship, interceding for others, meditating on Him, spontaneous, planned, quiet, loud, being still, while doing daily tasks, etc. That is what God meant through Paul's writings in Ephesians 6:18.
After Paul listed the spiritual armor, he said, "Pray at all times (on every occasion, in every season) in the Spirit with all [manner of] prayer and supplication."
It is not an accident that this command comes immediately after the list of armor. The Greek text has no punctuation in it. So, in reading verses 17 and 18 without punctuation, it shows that this spiritual warfare strategy is part of the armor and weapons.
Launch Your Intercontinental Ballistic Missile!
We have an intercontinental ballistic missile that can be launched (spoken with your heart, mind, and mouth) and directed by an advanced guidance system, the Holy Spirit, to a target to destroy an assigned enemy target. With this weapon we can attack and destroy demonic strongholds anywhere, even in the heavenlies.
Take a look at Acts 12:1-6. You see Peter in prison, and you see the church in another part of town. But when the church began to intercede for him, spiritual warfare missiles began to attack the enemy that held Peter in bondage. The power of God, as a result of an obedient Body of Christ, delivered Paul from prison that was quite a distance away. Our spiritual weapon is not limited by distance. God sent an angel from the heavenlies to provide Peter a miraculous, delivering escort out of the high security jail, in which he was guarded by four squads of four soldiers each, with one possibly chained to Peter!
Our spiritual missile breaks through Satan's kingdom in the heavenlies and releases divine angelic intervention. Without prayer, the other armor and weapons would be ineffective, and without the armor and weapons prayer would be ineffective. It is all connected and vitally important for spiritual warfare and defeat of the enemy.
The Weapon of Fasting
Something that we tend to read over quickly and not give much thought to is God's command to sacrifice or to give up something for a specific amount of time, such as a meal. This allows us to focus our mind and spirit more on God as we are seeking Him concerning something. It is also part of the warfare strategy and a very important.
Mark 9:29 says, "And He replied to them, This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer and fasting ."
Acts 13:2-3 (Amplified version)says, "2)While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, Separate now for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them. 3)Then after fasting and praying, they put their hands on them and sent them away."
These two spiritual warfare strategies are seen consistently together throughout the Old and New Testaments. The Bible shows the importance of them both.
So, let our spiritual weapon burst forth from within you to pierce the heavenlies and do mighty exploits for the Kingdom of God. He is waiting for a Church who will be obedient and use His spiritual weapons He has provided for us.
