Stress: The Silent Killer
by Charlotte Barton
Working full-time, taking the kids to school activities, keeping doctor appointments, going to the grocery store, doing laundry, cooking meals, cleaning the house, mowing the lawn, fixing the car, helping the kids with homework, doing after-hours paper work from your job, paying bills, taking care of sick family members, and the list goes on and on with all the responsibilities that is often placed in our laps to do on a daily basis.
All of the overload in our lives can be called one thing: Stress. Satan wants us to be so consumed with daily responsibilities and entertainment that God is pushed out of the forefront of our lives and our family, emotions, body, and spirit feel the negative effects of the pressures. Stress is a silent killer that Satan uses in our lives to try to destroy us emotionally, spiritually, and even physically.
Look at what the Merriam-Webster Dictionary online says the meaning of stress is:
"constraining force or influence: as a : a force exerted when one body or body part presses on, pulls on, pushes against, or tends to compress or twist another body or body part; especially : the intensity of this mutual force commonly expressed in pounds per square inch b : the deformation caused in a body by such a force c : a physical, chemical, or emotional factor that causes bodily or mental tension and may be a factor in disease causation d : a state resulting from a stress; especially : one of bodily or mental tension resulting from factors that tend to alter an existent equilibrium."
Do you feel like there is a force exerted on you from all the outside pressures in your life? Do you sometimes feel that you are compressed and twisted this way and that way, doing one task, but knowing you need to be getting this other task finished too?
What does your eyebrows and forehead do when you are stressed? With me, they tense up causing my forehead to wrinkle, which is a type of “deformation”. When something is changed from it's natural formation it becomes “deformed”.
Stress also causes deformation inside the body due to mental, emotional, and physical pressures. That deformation is disease and physical problems, that could eventually lead to death. What easier way for Satan to kill you! All he has to do is stress you out, cause your body's immune system to decrease allowing disease to take hold. Or crippling up your physical body so much that you are unable to fulfill God's calling on your life or unable to go out and witness to others. And, of course, you would not be able to take care of your family like you could in a healthy body.
The bottom line is this: Do not let Satan win!
You may say, “How in the world do I not be stressed?”
One way is to not take upon yourself tasks or pleasures that are not necessary or essential or do away with tasks or pleasures that you are involved in that is not necessary or essential.
But the most important way to deal with stress is to turn to God for the answers by searching the Scriptures and to turn all your cares upon Him. As a result, God will direct you if you need to eliminate anything out of your schedule. Let's look at what God says through His Word. Mark 4:19 says,
Then the cares and anxieties of the world and
distractions of the age, and the pleasure and delight and false glamour
and deceitfulness of riches, and the craving and passionate desire for
other things creep in and choke and suffocate the Word, and it becomes fruitless. (Amplified Bible)

That is what I just spoke about! All of the responsibilities and "stuff" we tend to find ourselves involved with or consumed with choke and suffocate God out of our lives and then our lives become fruitless. Satan uses life's distractions to hinder our relationship with our Savior. Set your mind today to not let the enemy distract you from the most important thing in this life: serving God.
For the next portion of scripture, Jesus said in Luke 21:34, But
take heed to yourselves and be on your guard, lest your hearts be
overburdened and depressed (weighed down) with the giddiness and
headache and nausea of self-indulgence, drunkenness, and worldly worries
and cares pertaining to [the business of] this life, and [lest] that
day come upon you suddenly like a trap or a noose; (Amplified Bible)
This shows you that Satan will try to place pressures in our lives, but he does it little by little. Then, suddenly, you find that you have stepped into his camouflaged trap and have allowed a tight noose around your neck so that you are pulled around like a puppet on strings. He wants to keep you completely wrapped up in your life (self-indulgence) not thinking as much about the things of God. He wants to keep you overburdened and weighed down with the stress of your life, causing a sense of dizziness, in which your life is whirling rapidly all around in busy cacaos.
God says "take heed" and be on your guard" not giving in to the tricks of the enemy. God does not want you to be lured into Satan's traps, and He does not want you to be burdened down with stress. God's Word says in 1 Corinthians 7:32,
"My desire is to have you free from all anxiety and distressing care..." (Amplified Bible)
But you may say, "But How do I become free from this anxiety and distressing care?" All you have to do is turn it all over to God. He says in Psalm 37:5 (Amplified Bible),
Commit your way to the Lord [roll and repose each
care of your load on Him]; trust (lean on, rely on, and be confident)
also in Him and He will bring it to pass.(click here for NKJV)
When you commit to something, you do it with complete devotion and focus. When you devote yourself and focus on Him trusting Him, if you will ask Him, He will help you through your times of stress and will help you know how to eliminate some of the pressures in your life as you rely on Him and confidently trust Him.
But you must ask. Too often we tend to try to make it on our own, trying to fix the problems on our own, only to cause our stress to multiply.
Are you tired and wore out? God is the answer. Isaiah 40:29 (Amplified Bible) says,
He gives power to the faint and weary, and to him
who has no might He increases strength [causing it to multiply and
making it to abound].
When you turn to God as your source for help and deliverance, He will strengthen you so you can carry on and go forth in what you are called to do or in what tasks you need to fulfill. And He will even cause your strength to multiply and make it abound (copiously supplied). But He cannot strengthen you if you do not trust Him for it or ask Him for it. So, claim God's promises from His Word today.
An important way to help you focus on God, therefore decreasing the level of stress that you would feel otherwise, would be to do what Philippians 4:8, 9 says to do,
8For the rest, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [fix your minds on them].
9Practice what you have learned and received and
heard and seen in me, and model your way of living on it, and the God of
peace (of untroubled, undisturbed well-being) will be with you. (Amplified Bible)

God is your peace, and He will be with you and strengthen you. He is your Deliverer and Help in time of need and in your stressful situation. Seek Him today as your most vital source of help, and He will bring you through. Seek His will, guidance, and wisdom in what you should do in dealing with the stress in your life. He will direct you if you will only listen to His still small voice. Just do not let the enemy let the stress become a silent killer in your life. Your life belongs to God. Commit your life completely to Him, and He will bring strength and victory into your life for His glory.
